Nerja July 11th

Hola!

Today we had another beautiful day playing in the sun. This afternoon we went the nearby village of Torre del Mar to spend the hours playing and relaxing at the water park. The group had a great time alternating between throwing themselves down the various water slides in the park and lying down on the grass and soaking up the sun.

At night we had a scavenger hunt throughout the village as the students were put into teams and asked to locate significant landmarks, beaches, and other things of interest. The winners of the hunt and the prized will be announced at a later date.

We have a fun-filled weekend planned as tomorrow we head to the last Muslim stronghold in Spain, Granada, and the most visited monument in the country, La Alhambra. Then on Sunday we have a visit planned to the caves of Nerja.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Buenos días!!

Today we had great day of sand and water activities. After morning class we headed to Nerja’s biggest beach, Playa Burriana, to spend the afternoon kayaking on the Mediterranean. We put on our life vests, grabbed our oars and set out for about two hours basking in the sun, taking short swims with goggle to see the marina life below and admiring the various waterfalls throughout the coastline that fall into the Mediteranean.

At night we had our second session with our Language Partners. Tonight the session took place on the beach under the moonlight. The students were led through a variety of typical Spanish group games, including the always popular, “Pañuelo”, an equivalent to our “Steal the Bacon”.

Tomorrow we’re going to the water park in the afternoon and have a scavenger hunt throughout the village at night.

Hasta luego!

Hola a Todos!

Today we had a day full of Spanish culture. In the afternoon we had a cooking class at the residence of the language school and prepared a fideuá, a typical Spanish dish similar to paella but made with small pasta noodles instead of rice. The students cut all the veggies and fish (squid and monkfish), made a colorful fruit salad, and mixed a virgin Sangria made with tropical juice, sparkling water, grenadine and fresh fruit. The food was delicious and all the students were given the recipe so they can prepare one they get back to the States ;).

At night we had a very lively Salsa dance class with one our language partners, Pedro. He taught us the basic steps of salsa and everyone caught on quickly. After learning the basics, the students had a great time spinning around the dance floor and trying out their new moves.

Today we had our first classes at the language school here in Nerja. The school is just a short 5 min walk from our hotel and has a beautiful central courtyard and many small classrooms. The students were all excited to get started with classes and happy with their groups at the end of the day.

We also had our first session with our Language Partners in the evening. We split up into three groups and Pedro, Dani, and Anabel (the Language Partners) took the groups on a tour of the village. They commented on the best beaches to go to, the 80’s Spanish TV series, “Verano Azul” that was filmed in Nerja (you can YouTube episodes and see scenes from all over the village), and many other interesting facts about the village.

After the language partners session, we ate dinner at an ocean-side restaurant with a fabulous view of the Mediterranean Sea. We were served intricate fruit salads in pineapple bowls, delicious ribs, and out-of-this-world desserts. Next to the restaurant, there were trampolines with bungee cords attached and some of the students decided to find their inner child and do some flips way above the Mediterranean.

Tomorrow we have cooking class at the school and a Salsa dance class at night.

Saludos,

Dave

Hola a Todos!

Today we had a travel day as we caught the high-speed train from Madrid to Málaga this morning, then a bus from Málaga to Nerja. After getting settled in to our hotel the students had some free time to explore the town. Later, we had dinner in the hotel and took a stroll to the lively Balcón de Europa to have an ice cream and enjoy the very mild Andalucían summer night.

Tomorrow class starts in the language school and we have our first session with our language partners in the evening.

Hasta mañana,
Dave
